DIY Wall Banner with Gold Stitching

wall banner craft tutorialThis DIY wall banner was a craft project that was born mostly from items i had in my craft stash. I found some fabric i had screen printed while i was cleaning up the Hen’s Den (aka craft shed) and while i wasn’t keen to make anymore cushions, i didn’t want the prints to go to waste. I printed a couple of these gold hearts and turned one into the cushion you can see in the above image. I love a good craft clean up because you always find things you’d forgotten about. After a quick search i had gold thread, gold rope, black fabric, tassels and an idea! Obviously, the cleaning would have to wait for another day. 🙂

The Steps
1. sketch a rough plan of how you want your banner to look.
2. cut your fabric to the size you want. Mine is 15 x 30 inches finished with allowances made for hemming and inserting dowel at either end. Iron and sew a hem down either side on the fabric.
3. Hem the top and bottom and then turn over again to create a tunnel for the dowel.
4. Using a fabric pencil sketch your design onto the fabric.
5. Attach the embroidery hoop and using a backstitch hand stitch your design. A running stitch would work too.
6. Pin the heart into place before stitching.
7. Stitch a little in from the edge so the heart has a slight fraying effect.
8. Insert dowel and tie on tassels.
9. Attach rope to the top of dowel and you’re done! 🙂
